Images and news season 2 - True Detective

It's been over a year since HBO's True Detective debuted and introduced all of us the ambiguous character of Matthew McConaughey - Rustin Cohle, but after months and months of ads on season 2, the production of the series is finally underway California... and we have the photos to prove it!

The images do not say much, but one thing is certain. We are not in the swamps of Louisiana.
Located in California, True Detective Season 2 will see as protagonists, three corrupt police officers with a criminal career. Farrell plays the cop Ray Velcoro, whose alliances are divided between the police department and the mafia boss Semyon Frank - Vince Vaughn. Meanwhile, Kitsch plays a veteran cop and Woodrugh Paul, who works for the California Highway Patrol Rachel McAdams as a detective named Ani Bezzerides.

True Detective, the anthology series!

True detective - Pilot

The first thing I usually do when I start to look a Pilot is to see by it was written. And I find the name of Nic Pizzolato, author of eight episodes of the first season, executive producer and showrunner.

"People out here, it's like they do not even know the outside world exists. Might as well be living on the fucking moon "the words spoken by our protagonist, Rust Cohle help the viewer understand what environment will host the series.


We are in Louisiana, it is the first thing that I was not convinced here, and that is Mr. Fukunaga shows us desolately ample outdoor spaces and voids, as opposed to enclosed spaces. Typical setting of Louisiana ok, but compulsively proposal.



Another key figure in the series is the character of Martin that at some moment of the first episode gives nicknames different types of cop that exist: "the bully, the charmer, the surrogate dad, the man possessed by an ungovernable rage, the brain".

I find who is a little bit the climax of the episode (if not the entire season) the director plays with the images that we use to describe the figure of the policeman in noir, and being an anthology series, that is, with cast and different stories in each season, one day we will find as the protagonist's character as a "bully" or as a "charmer", perhaps even in the second season.

The "human factor" is important, as a noir of respect: the flashback structure gives us a portrait of two men who met 17 years earlier to investigate a murder of a serial killer. New techniques and used with intelligence, excellent casting, photographs refined and careful and a story that appears to be deep and realistic.
How to pilot the pace is measured to perfection. The dramatic and raw make a series to be savored, and that it is the right balance between "noir" and crime.

True Detective, la serie antologica!

True detective - Pilot

La prima cosa che normalmente faccio quando inizio a guardare un Pilot è vedere da chi è stato scritto. E scopro il nome di Nic Pizzolato, autore degli 8 episodi di questa prima stagione, oltre a esserne il produttore esecutivo e lo showrunner. 

“People out here, it’s like they don’t even know the outside world exists. Might as well be living on the fucking moon” le parole pronunciate dal nostro protagonista, Rust Cohle ci fa subito immergere nell'ambiente nel quale si svolgerà la serie.

Siamo in Louisiana, e qui potrei soffermarmi sulla prima cosa che non mi ha convinto, e cioè Mr. Fukunaga nel mostrarci gli spazi esterni desolatamente ampi e vuoti, in contrapposizione con gli spazi chiusi, abbia ecceduto. Ambientazione tipica della Louisiana ok, ma compulsivamente proposta fino allo spasmo dal regista.

Altro personaggio fondamentale nella serie è il personaggio di Martin che ad un certo momento della prima puntata dà dei soprannomi diversi tipi di poliziotto che esistono: “the bully, the charmer, the surrogate dad, the man possessed by an ungovernable rage, the brain”.

Trovo chi sia un pò la scena madre della puntata (se non dell'intera stagione) il regista gioca con le immagini che noi utilizziamo per descrivere la figura del poliziotto nei noir, e chissà, essendo una serie antologica, cioè con cast e storie diverse in ogni stagione, un giorno troveremo come protagonista il personaggio come un "bully" o come un "charmer", magari proprio nella seconda stagione.

Il “fattore umano” appare fondamentale, come un noir di rispetto: la struttura a flashback ci restituisce il ritratto di due uomini che si sono incontrati 17 anni prima per indagare su un omicidio di un serial killer. Tecniche nuove e utilizzate con intelligenza, ottimo casting, fotografie raffinate ed attente e un racconto che appare essere profondo e realistico. 

Mi auguro che si vivacizzi un pò con l'evolvere della serie, ma come pilot il ritmo è dosato alla perfezione. I toni drammatici e crudi lo rendono una serie tutta da gustare, e che sia  il giusto equilibrio fra "noir" e crime.
